Brand Kit for Etsy Sellers: Listings, Banners, Watermarks
Quick Answer
An Etsy seller's essential brand kit is a simple 500x500 shop icon, a repeatable photo style, and listing images that stay clear when Etsy crops them. A shop banner is useful but optional: Etsy recommends 1600x400 pixels for a big banner or 1600x213 for a mini banner. Skip overlay watermarks in most cases. Etsy says they can make images ineligible for editorial features and offsite ads, and recommends putting branding in the scene or packaging instead.
An Etsy brand kit does not need mockups for letterhead, billboards, or a fleet of delivery vans. It needs to make a product recognizable in a crowded search page and make the shop behind it feel like the same business.
That mostly comes down to the listing photos. The shop icon and banner help once someone visits your storefront, but the first image is what they see while comparing you with everyone else. Spend your effort in that order.
The short answer
Start with these assets:
- A 500x500 shop icon with a simple mark and little or no small text
- A repeatable photo setup: background, lighting, framing, and one editing preset
- High-resolution listing images with enough room around the product for Etsy's changing thumbnail crops
- A big or mini shop banner if you have a strong product photograph or pattern to use
- A small set of brand colors and one or two typefaces for graphics, packaging, and inserts
- A packaging detail that can appear naturally in photos, such as a branded card, stamp, label, or box
Do not add a watermark just because it appears on a generic brand-kit checklist. Etsy generally advises sellers against overlay watermarks because those images may not qualify for Etsy features or offsite advertising. There are better ways to show ownership without putting a translucent logo across the product.
What is essential, optional, and easy to skip
For a new shop, the priority looks like this:
| Asset | Priority | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Listing photo system | Essential | It appears in search and carries most of the buying decision |
| Shop icon | Essential | It identifies the shop across Etsy, including at small sizes |
| Color and type choices | Essential | They keep inserts, packaging, and graphics recognizably yours |
| Big or mini banner | Useful | It gives the shop home some character, but does not rescue weak listings |
| Branded packaging detail | Useful | It can identify your work inside a photograph without an overlay |
| Order receipt banner | Optional | Buyers see it after purchase, so it has little effect on discovery |
| Watermark overlay | Usually skip | Etsy discourages it, and it can get in the way of the product |
| Full brand guidelines | Later | A one-page reference is enough while one person runs the shop |
"Essential" here means essential to a credible, consistent shop, not a technical requirement for opening an Etsy account. Etsy's upload rules and your branding needs are different things.
Build the brand around the listing thumbnail
Your first listing photo has several jobs. It has to show what is for sale, survive more than one crop, and look related to the rest of your shop. A logo in the corner will not fix a dark photograph or a product that disappears into the background.
Etsy's current image requirements and recommendations say listing images should be at least 2000 pixels wide and 2000 pixels high. The first image needs to be at least 635 pixels in both dimensions to avoid a possible search penalty. Treat 2000x2000 as the more useful working minimum. It leaves room to adjust the crop without enlarging a small file.
Etsy recommends a landscape or square first photo, with the subject near the center and extra space around it. The same image may appear in square, portrait, and landscape thumbnail views. Before publishing, use Etsy's thumbnail adjustment tool and check every preview. If a handle, earring, line of text, or product edge disappears, pull the crop back.
A consistent listing system can be very plain. Decide where the main light comes from, which background you use, how close the camera sits, and how warm or cool the final edit should look. Write those choices down. When you photograph the next batch six weeks later, you will have something more useful than a vague instruction to "match the old photos."
The product still needs to lead. Avoid turning every first image into a mini poster with a border, logo, slogan, and several labels. Etsy says a dark, blurry, or collage-style main image may appear lower in search. Save dimensions, care instructions, and variant charts for later images where they can be read properly.
Make a shop icon that works small
Etsy recommends a 500x500 image for the shop logo. That is the upload size, not the viewing size. The icon also appears much smaller in feeds, receipts, and the Etsy app.
Use the simplest recognizable part of your identity: an initial, a compact symbol, or a short wordmark if the shop name remains legible. A detailed crest and a long slogan may look fine in the source file but turn into a blur in the interface.
Preview the icon at roughly the size of a phone notification. If you cannot tell what it is, simplify it. This is the same problem a logo faces as a favicon or social avatar; an icon-only logo variant is often more useful here than the full horizontal lockup.
Export the icon as a JPEG or a PNG without transparency. Etsy accepts several image formats, but transparent PNG areas can appear black after upload. Keep the editable master elsewhere so you can export a new file without rebuilding it.
Pick one banner, or leave it for later
The banner is the most visible graphic on the shop home, but shoppers may reach an individual listing without seeing it. It belongs below listing photography and the shop icon on the launch list.
Etsy currently gives these sizes:
| Banner type | Recommended size | Minimum size |
|---|---|---|
| Big shop banner | 1600x400 px | 1200x300 px |
| Mini shop banner | 1600x213 px | 1200x160 px |
| Carousel banner | 1200x300 px | Etsy Plus only |
Collage and carousel layouts require Etsy Plus. Most new sellers can ignore them. A big banner gives a strong product photograph or repeat pattern enough space to work. A mini banner keeps the listings higher on the desktop page and does not appear on mobile.
Keep text near the center and use little of it. The shop name is enough if it is not already obvious. Sale dates and shipping promises age quickly, and a banner that needs weekly maintenance tends to become wrong before it becomes useful.
Why a watermark is usually the wrong move
Sellers have a reasonable fear: someone can save a product photo and reuse it. A large watermark appears to solve that. In practice, it also covers the item your customer is trying to inspect.
Etsy's own image-protection guidance says watermarked photos are unsuitable for some Etsy features and ineligible for offsite advertising programs such as Google Shopping. Etsy instead suggests putting the brand into the image without using an overlay. That could mean a logo on the backing card, a branded box beside the item, a sewn label, or a small printed insert that belongs in the scene.
For prints and original art, Etsy recommends photographing the physical work or showing it in context rather than uploading a clean, high-resolution digital file as the listing image. A framed print on a wall is harder to repurpose than the print file itself, and it helps the customer judge scale.
None of this guarantees that an image will not be copied. Keep the original files, raw photographs, and dated exports. If theft is a serious risk in your category, use a branded scene for the first image and reserve closer detail shots for later positions. The goal is to make casual reuse less convenient without making the listing worse for a buyer.
Carry the same choices into packaging
The most believable Etsy branding often sits on the product or package rather than on a digital template. A jewelry backing card, soap label, thank-you insert, care card, stamp, or shipping sticker gives the shop a physical identity. It may also appear naturally in your photographs.
You do not need a different design for every piece. Reuse the shop icon, colors, and type from the listing system. Keep the product name, material, care instructions, and required business information readable. Decorative branding should not push useful information into tiny type.
A one-page reference is enough to keep this straight:
Shop icon file:
Primary and neutral colors:
Display typeface:
Body typeface:
Photo background and lighting:
Photo crop rule:
Packaging mark:
Files used for banner and inserts:
If you later hire a photographer or designer, this page gives them a starting point. You can turn it into a fuller brand style guide once more people are producing assets.
A practical launch order
Photograph one product first and build the system around it. Check the thumbnail crops on desktop and mobile, then use the same setup for the rest of the range. Export the 500x500 shop icon next. After those two pieces are working, make the banner and packaging files.
Leave the watermark out unless you have a specific reason to accept Etsy's tradeoffs. Leave advanced banners and a long style guide out until the shop has enough products and traffic to justify the work.
Brandize can help you keep the logo, colors, type, and reusable brand assets together. Etsy still needs good product photography. The kit's job is to make those photographs and the shop around them feel like they came from the same seller.
